Liquid-cooled electric motors deliver the following superior performance characteristics: High power and high speed simultaneously, low inertia, smaller footprint, quieter, and longer life. The Speed Freq® product line is a family of water-cooled electric motors and oil-cooled electric motors. Motors of both water and oil cooling configurations are offered with a variety of bearing lubrication schemes. Reference the tables below for performance characteristics for standard motor configurations; please note that higher power, higher speed, and higher torque levels can be achieved through custom design.

Our high-performance liquid-cooled AC motors are exceptionally fast and surprisingly power dense. By incorporating enhanced liquid cooling methods inside our motors, we are able to increase heat transfer efficiency and allow for higher power densities, thereby giving our motors the ability to create higher torque levels while still utilizing a small rotor, and therefore still maintaining appropriate rotor dynamics for high-speed operation. Burgi has been in business engineering and building high-performance liquid-cooled electric motors since 2002. We have years of relevant field experience integrating high-performance rotating machinery and an ever-growing list of prior design accomplishments to leverage. Unlike motors from other custom motor manufacturers, our liquid-cooled electric motors have proven themselves capable of outputting true continuous duty performance. We have invested in a high-speed test lab, giving us the ability to expose our motors to lengthy duration full-load test profiles. This unique advantage has allowed us to better understand the limitations of existing designs and to further advance the capabilities of our liquid-cooled electric motors.

 

Water-Cooled Electric Motors

Our SFEX-1000 series is a water-cooled electric motor with a water passage around the exterior of the motor frame and grease-lubricated bearings. Our SFEX-2000 series is a water-cooled electric motor with a water passage around the exterior of the motor frame and air-oil lubricated bearings. Water cooling electric motors create significant performance gains over air cooling methods. Both the SFEX-1000 and SFEX-2000 are offered in a range of motor frame sizes, see the tables below for standard performance characteristics.

 

Oil Cooled Electric Motors

Our SFEX-3000 series is an oil-cooled electric motor with an oil jacket around the exterior of the motor frame as well as oil passages inside the motor, which supply additional cooling oil to the motor’s rotor and stator. The same oil that is used to cool the motor is also used to cool and lubricate the motor’s bearings.  Our SFEX-PLUS series is an oil-cooled electric motor with an oil jacket around the exterior of the motor frame as well as oil passages inside the motor. In addition to supplying cooling oil to the motor’s rotor and stator, SFEX-PLUS motors also have fluid passages through the motor’s shaft to provide even further cooling of the rotor and shaft material. The same oil that is used to cool the motor is also used to cool and lubricate the motor’s bearings. Our liquid-cooled AC motors are used by industry giants in the automotive and aerospace business to test their most advanced technologies.  See below an SFEX-PLUS motor in a 14L frame size, this motor was rated at 31,000 RPM / 68kW continuous duty.  Also, pictured below is an SFEX-2000 motor in a 21L frame size, this motor was rated at 20,000 RPM / 45kW continuous duty.

We engineer and manufacture our liquid-cooled ac motors in-house. We have a complete machine shop, as well as stator winding and rotor fabrication areas in our facility. We have a full understanding of what goes into each motor, including knowledge of the materials being utilized, the amount of press between the rotor and shaft, the electrical design,  natural frequency of the rotor, bearing stiffness values, component stress levels, and heat transfer data for multiple elements inside the motor.  The Speed Freq® product line is a semi-standard product line, with several standard frame sizes and cooling/lubrication configurations to choose from.  However, almost every motor we sell has been customized to some extent to match the motor’s performance to the customer’s required speed/torque profile, as well as accommodating customer interface requirements. Our liquid-cooled motors contain distinct cooling passages that allow for enhanced cooling of the internal elements of our motors allowing us to push our high liquid-cooled motor designs to their limits.
